The bell rings from 8:40-8:45 as a call to worship, a tradition at Harvard since its founding in 1636. Held in Appleton Chapel Monday - Saturday during the term, the short "Morning Prayers" service consists of music, prayer, and a brief address given by a member or friend of the University. The ringing of the bell again at the end of the service at 9 a.m. marks the beginning of the academic day.
