For two centuries there was only one Harvard Library. As the College became a University, over 90 specialized libraries were added to the system. There are now 73 libraries, of which Widener is by far the largest, with about 1/3 of the 18+ million books at Harvard, chiefly in the humanities and social sciences. Widener is sometimes called the "flagship" library.
