To improve your results in HOLLIS+, Academic Search Premier, and other multidisciplinary resources, try adding:

  • language terms (Chinese, Sinophone)
  • language family names (Slavic, Indo-European)
  • geographical region (Latin America, Asia)

It's often possible to refine your results by language of publication: look for "language" in a side menu, or among the options on an advanced search page.

See the HCL research contacts page to find out how to get in touch with our subject specialists in specific areas (e.g. Slavic, Romance, Middle Eastern, Near Eastern, East Asian, African). Research contacts and liaisons are available for in-person consultations and are also happy to respond to research questions via email or phone.

Harvard Library licenses many databases that specialize in individual languages, and in sub-areas (news, literature, science) in those languages. To find these, ask a librarian for a recommendation, consult a relevant research guide, or search our Databases List for a specific language, language family, or geographical region (Middle East, Europe, etc.)

MLA Bibliography (Modern Language Association) 1963+ -- Indexes over 4,400 journals and series as well as relevant monographs, working papers and proceedings pertaining to literature, language, linguistics, and folklore.

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts 1973+ -- LLBA indexes and provides abstracts for journal articles from over 1,500 journals annually in all areas of language and linguistics. International in scope, LLBA also includes books, book chapters, etc. in all areas of language and linguistics.

National Library Catalogs: many countries have national libraries, whose catalogs are freely searchable online. Resources that aggregate library catalogs from different countries include WorldCat and Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog. Contact a librarian for help locating the best catalog for a specific country or language.
