I got a "courtesy notice" that says my items can't be renewed: do I really need to return everything?

Unless you are graduating or otherwise leaving Harvard for good, you may hold on to items you have borrowed from the library through at least the end of 2020.

This includes items that are marked as "overdue" in your account. You may continue to receive automated messages from our system about these items; please feel free to ignore these messages. Depending on the types of items you have checked out, you may also see a "lost item" fee show up in your account. Please rest assured that you can leave the fee unpaid; it will clear when you do eventually return the item.

While not required, you are welcome to return library items as you are able. We especially encourage the return of items requested from other institutions through Interlibrary Loan or BorrowDirect, so that we can get them back to their own libraries. For instructions on how, please see Book Return while the library buildings are closed.

If overdue items or unpaid fees in your library account are affecting anything else in university systems, such as your registration, or if you have questions about book return including ILL/BorrowDirect, please email hl_access_services@harvard.edu immediately so that we can find a solution for you. We appreciate your patience as we better understand and repair any unintended consequences of the ad-hoc solutions implemented during our unprecedented closure.
