Wolbach Library Closure

Where are the Wolbach Library materials? How can I get research guidance in my field? What other services are available?

The Center for Astrophysics has decided to close Wolbach Library permanently, effective  March 22, 2024. The work of transferring the many and varied Harvard-owned materials of the Wolbach collections into the larger Harvard library will take time, which may affect availability. The future location(s) of the Smithsonian-owned materials from the Wolbach collections are still being determined.

The Wolbach Transition Period guide has been created to keep library users informed during this period. It contains information about available library resources, including services and staff.

Here are some quick FAQs, but check out the guide for more information.

  • Where do I return books I checked out at Wolbach?
    • The closest return location to the Center for Astrophysics is the Currier House Book Drop Box in Radcliffe Quad. The box is in the foyer area inside the main doors (where the shuttle bus stops) and is clearly marked.
    • Alternatively, return them to any library in Harvard Yard or to one of the graduate and professional school libraries. See Harvard Library Locations and Hours. Most libraries with circulating collections (materials that can be checked out) accept materials at the Circulation Desk and also have drop boxes outside. The security guard at Widener’s Massachusetts Avenue entrance will accept returns 24-7.
  • Who can help me with astronomy and astrophysics research questions?
    • Robyn Rosenberg is the current liaison librarian for Astronomy and Astrophysics. Contact her with reference and research questions, as well as questions about the Wolbach collections.
  • Where are other library study spaces?
  • What will be done with the Wolbach library space?
    • The future of the space is a department or building decision rather than a library one, so check Center for Astrophysics and building-related resources.

Service Alert:
  • Ask a Librarian, including chat and email, will be suspended Thursday July 4 through Sunday, July 7, 2024, in observance of the holiday weekend. Any questions received during this period will be answered beginning Monday, July 8.
