How do I log on to a library computer?
Widener Library is the best place to use a library computer to access online resources. Guest computers are located in Widener Room 180, behind the main stairs on the first floor, and in the Atkins Reference Room, on the second floor.
At other libraries, computer availability and log-on procedures may vary. Visiting Researchers to Harvard Library provides additional details about how to navigate the library with a Library Access Card or Library Borrowing Card.
Find the guest login screen
- Select a PC
- If you select a Mac, confirm that there are guest login credentials affixed to the machine and follow the onscreen login instructions
- Acknowledge the "IMPORTANT NOTICE" that data will not be saved
- On the first log-in screen, select "How do I sign in to another domain?” (small, pale link below the log-on boxes)
Log in to the computer
- Computer-specific login
- Check for a sign or sticker affixed to the base of the computer monitor with a username and password to use
- Alternate login - if there is no sign affixed to the base of the computer
- Follow the onscreen instructions for what to type to "sign in to this PC (not a domain)"
- In place of "local user name," enter: hcl-patron
- Leave the password field blank
- Follow the onscreen instructions for what to type to "sign in to this PC (not a domain)"
Log in to OpenAthens
You will need to log in to OpenAthens in order to access licensed e-resources such as Harvard Library databases and many "ONLINE ACCESS" links in HOLLIS. Follow this process each time you start a new browser session
- Open an internet browser and navigate to https://my.openathens.net/auth
- Check around the room for login instructions, typically in a clear plastic stand - these instructions will provide the building-specific login credentials you need to use
Please report issues with OpenAthens so we can troubleshoot them - this includes problems logging in and any HOLLIS links that ask you for a HarvardKey even after you've logged in to Open Athens
