I usually use saved EZ Proxy links to get to library materials. How can I fix my EZ Proxy link(s) now that EZ Proxy is discontinued?

EZ Proxy links, which have been replaced over the past year by a new authentication service (OpenAthens), were operational until June 1. They have now been discontinued.

If you’re using a link you bookmarked or otherwise saved before June 1, you’ll need to revise that link, make another bookmark, or use a bookmark extension. Here are some ways to do that.

EZ Proxy Link Transformer Tool

  • When we try to use an EZ proxy link, it should reroute that link to this page: https://p.lib.harvard.edu/ezproxy/.
    • As described there, if you're able to copy the old link you should be able to plug it into the EZproxy link transformer tool . This will update bookmarked link(s) containing ezp-prod1.hul.harvard.edu/login?url= to links compatible with the new OpenAthens authentication system.

HOLLIS

  • If the EZ proxy link transformer tool doesn’t work for you, you can still use HOLLIS to get to all Harvard Library resources.
    • Permalinks in HOLLIS: you can make your own bookmarks using HOLLIS permalinks under “Send To:” in the HOLLIS record for a given item.
    • If you get the EZ Proxy Service Retirement page when you were already in HOLLIS to begin with, the recommended solution is to clear your browser cache.

“Log in through your institution” without going through HOLLIS

  • A new feature is the ability to log in at the website for those publishers and databases that have this option. No need to go through HOLLIS in every case. See our FAQ on this for tips.

Bookmark extensions

  • in addition to putting links in your browser bookmarks, another option is to use these custom extensions.
    • Check Harvard Library Bookmark
      • When you get to a site that requires authentication, click on the bookmark
      • Works on your phone too
      • If you’ve been using a javascript to get to Harvard Library resources without going to HOLLIS, this is it (just revised for OpenAthens)
    • LibKey Nomad
      • Works automatically in the background to authenticate you on applicable sites
    • If the extension doesn’t work, that usually means we don’t have online access. It’s always best to check HOLLIS to be sure. Remember that we may also have print access options in HOLLIS.

Clear your browser history

Zotero extension tweak

  • For Zotero users: we’re seeing the Zotero connector browser extension sometimes take people in circles. There’s an easy fix. It’s step 3 under “Other Recommended Tweaks” at the bottom of the main page of our Zotero guide.

o   If a Zotero user prefers to auto-proxy certain sites, there’s a link to HUIT’s guidance included in the proxy fix instructions.
