I need to do some research in Environmental Studies or Sustainability. Where do I start?
First Try
A good first look might include searching Environment Index, a database of environment and sustainability scholarly article citations or full text going back decades. For an even broader article search, try Academic Search Premier, which endeavors to cover all academic disciplines.
Go-to Links
The Environment at a Glance Research Guide is a simple list of links designed to take you quickly to databases, guides, and other resources that may be helpful for your work.
Specialized Help
Environmental and sustainability studies is one of the broadest topics of research. Topics range across the social sciences, policy studies, physical sciences, and humanities. So one great place to go for help is the Harvard Library's searchable list of library guides. Similarly, there are librarians who specialize in all disciplines and approaches of scholarly research, and in the various schools of Harvard University, including the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (Harvard College and GSAS).
You may also contact environmental research librarian George E. Clark (Lamont Library) at the environment and sustainability email enviro@fas.harvard.edu, or phone 617-496-6158. George can help with environment- and sustainability-related books, journals, government documents, indexes, databases, and other resources across the university libraries and the web. Ask anything. Questions are not restricted to environment and sustainability topics per se, but may include lines of inquiry such as demographics, development, geography, regulations, water resources, natural and environmental hazards, energy, agriculture, health, industry, conflict, social vulnerability, and so on. George can also help with referrals to librarians throughout the Harvard system.
